The phrase digital nomad may not be one that you have heard before but it is a term which you are likely to be hearing a whole lot more of in the future. To explain this in basic terms a digital nomad is someone who is able to make a living from online activities and computer work, which enables them to work remotely from anywhere in the world. AS you can well imagine this is a career and lifestyle choice which many are keen to take on, but it isn’t for everyone. We spoke with digital nomad Dayanna Volitich to find out some of the pros and cons of this way of life.
I first wanted to get Dayanna’s take on the positives of this lifestyle, what it is about living the life of a digital nomad that she would recommend;
Being location independent is certainly one of the greatest aspects of this job. In fact being a digital nomad means that you could work on the beach, by the pool, from a tent or just about anywhere in the world that has an internet connection. Location independence is usually one of the biggest reasons why people chose this lifestyle.
Being able to work whenever you want is a great benefit of this lifestyle and it means no more asking for holiday time or days off, no more overtime and no more groveling to the boss when you need a dentist appointment.
When you become a digital nomad your future is very much in your own hands and you won’t have to rely on being spotted or recommended for that promotion. If you want to be more successful and make more money, it is all in your hands.
It isn’t all positive of course and there are some negatives of a having a lifestyle like this.
– No Work No Pay
Many companies will pay their staff for vacations and sickness but not when you are working as a digital nomad, in this lifestyle if you don’t work, you don’t get paid, it is that simple.
– No Gossip
Very often working in this way means many hours of sitting at the computer alone, without much interaction from anyone else. In my old job I used to love the gossip each day and that is something that I definitely miss having around. Furthermore it can be a little bit trickier to meet new people when you have this way of life, given that most friends and couples meet at work.
– Up and Down
Unless you have a regular gig going then you will face months of ups and downs when it comes to making money. Some months you will do very well and have plenty of cash on the hip, but then you may face 2 or 3 months which aren’t quite so good, the lack of a regular salary can be challenging.
